In fact, almost 70 percent of adults in the country have tartar. This yellowish or brownish chunk form in your teeth, gums, or in between after hardening as plaque.
Tartar can cause a lot of problems in your mouth, including tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Although we can’t avoid plaque, there are still ways to avoid it from building up, which includes avoiding to eat food that help cause it in the first place.
- Sweets – Food rich in sugar and have a sticky texture like candies, caramel, cough drops, cakes, and fruits will definitely increase plaque bacteria. This is why kids are also highly prone to tooth decay.
- Starch – Carbohydrate and starch heavy food, i.e. bread, sucrose, potato chips, and rice, can get trapped in between your teeth can definitely cause plaque build-up especially when left not brushed.
- Soda – Most carbonated drinks have as much or even more sugar than sweet treats. They also have phosphoric and citric acid which can wear out your tooth enamel and leave you vulnerable to plaque.
Now the question is, how can plaque be removed? Plaque buildup can be prevented by brushing at least twice a day and regularly flossing, but in terms of removing tartar at home. You can’t. There are a lot of DIY suggestions on the internet, but the only secure way to remove it and protect your mouth from cavities is through professional teeth cleaning.
